New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced that Devil's Tombstone Campground and Day Use Area will be temporarily closed for the 2019 season in order to complete upgrades. Planned improvements include providing electrical service to campsites, repaving roads, rehabilitating the water system and improving restroom facilities. Located six miles south of the town of Hunter, NY, in Greene County, Devil’s Tombstone opened in 1926, making it one of the oldest parks in the New York state system, and is one of the most popular campgrounds in the Catskill Forest Preserve. It occupies a spectacular site on the shores of Notch Lake in Stony Clove, a rugged mountain pass in the Catskills. A major feature is a large boulder, known since Colonial days as the Devil’s Tombstone.
The DEC is contacting all current reservation holders, and suggests campers visit nearby campgrounds at North South Lake, also in Greene County, or Kenneth L. Wilson Campground or Woodland Valley Campground both in Ulster County.
