New Jersey Campground Owners Association Executive Director Joann DelVescio traveled to Washington, DC last week to participate in Destination Capitol Hill (DCH), the U.S. Travel industry's leading legislative event. Travel leaders from across the nation head to Washington, DC to educate policymakers about the impact the travel industry has throughout the country and in their states.
This was DelVescio’s sixth year attending the event. She commented, “Each year offers a new experience and an opportunity to meet with New Jersey’s legislators.” Joann was able to meet with freshman Congressman Jeff VanDrew, who represents the 2nd District of New Jersey. “It was nice to meet with Congressman VanDrew and discuss the importance of camping and tourism on a larger scale”, DelVescio stated. She had worked with VanDrew on many local, South Jersey issues when he represented the area as a Freeholder and State Senator. Joann also met with Senator Menendez, staff members from Senator Cory Booker, Congressmen Andy Kim and Congressman Malinowski, as well as Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman.
Topics discussed with legislators included renewing Brand USA’s funding which drives inbound travel to the US from abroad; investing in America’s travel infrastructure; the Visa Waiver Program which is being renamed the Secure Travel Partnership Program; and investing in America’s National Parks as well as issues of importance to New Jersey – off-shore drilling and the federal minimum wage proposal.
