Heavy Rains Impact Wisconsin State Parks
Editor's Note: This news item was retrieved and first published through Wisconsin DNR's website.
Recent heavy rains have caused the closing of several park and trails, as well as roads, within the state park system of Wisconsin, according to Wisconsin DNR. Impacted facilities include Amnicon Falls State Park, which has reopened after being closed temporarily, though some roads, trails and observation areas remain closed. Pattison State Park is open for camping only, with all trails, observation areas, picnic and day-use areas closed. Highway 35 over the dam that forms Interfalls Lake is closed due to washouts. The campground and horse trail at Governor Knowles State Forest are closed and the day use areas along the river at Interstate Park are underwater. Sections of the Tuscobia, Saunders Grade, Wild Rivers and Gandy Dancer state trails are currently closed.
The National Weather Service says the area received 7 to 12 inches of rain within four days, and rivers in the region are running extremely high. Some canoe launches and campsites on the Bois Brule and Flambeau rivers are underwater. On the Lower Wisconsin River all sandbars are submerged and canoeing and kayaking is not recommended. Trout streams in central Wisconsin are very high and unfishable but bass fishing on many inland lakes has been very good.
