The RV Industry Association (RVIA) reports that Virginia has created an Office of Outdoor Recreation (OREC) within the Commonwealth’s Department of Commerce and Trade. The new office will coordinate and promote the state’s outdoor industry and recruit outdoor product manufacturers to bring production facilities to the Old Dominion. Virginia joins a growing number of states that have established ORECs to help to grow the outdoor recreation economy, which represents 2.2 percent of the total gross domestic product (GDP) and contributes $734 billion to the country’s economy annually.
Last year, the RVIA along with other members of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable urged the governors of all 50 states to establish ORECs. “The RV industry applauds the creation of an Office of Outdoor Recreation in Virginia and the state’s commitment to prioritizing the growth of outdoor recreation,” RV Industry Association Vice President of Government Affairs Jay Lander said in a press release. “In addition to outdoor recreation as a whole, this office will support the nearly 400 RV businesses who create more than 7,000 jobs and pay $340 million in wages here in Virginia.”
