RESTON, Va. – The fall issue of RV Road Signs, a quarterly forecast produced for the RV Industry Association (RVIA) by independent RV industry analyst Dr. Richard Curtin, director of Surveys of Consumers at the University of Michigan, predicts that wholesale shipments of RVs will continue to decline in 2019 and 2020. Shipments in 2019 are expected to total 401,200, off 17.1 percent from 2018. However, Dr. Curtin predicts that the rate of decline will slow in 2020, down 3.5 percent with shipments of 387,400 units. According to the report, this scenario has a 60 percent probability of proving true, depending on economic conditions.
Curtin sees the drop in RV shipments being moderated in 2020 by an expanding economy, low inflation, and continued growth in wages and employment. Although total numbers are in decline from the all-time record high of 504,600 units in 2017, the projected year-end totals of 401,200 units in 2019 and 387,400 units in 2020 would still rank as the fourth and sixth best years for the RV industry ever.
