SEATTLE – REI Co-op announced the opening of three new stores in spring 2020. One will be in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, a gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Another new store will be in Billings, Montana, in the Yellowstone Valley, close to numerous trailheads and the Beartooth National Scenic Byway. A third will open in Gainesville, Florida, joining a previously announced store in downtown Tampa due to open in 2021.
The new stores join REI’s family of 162 stores in 39 states and the District of Columbia, including four that opened on Nov. 15, 2019, in Farmington, Utah; Huntsville, Alabama; Oklahoma City and Williston, Vermont. During 2019, REI added eight new stores, relocated two existing stores to larger locations, and opened three new boathouses, offering watersports equipment, rentals and experiences. While REI’s retail shops are open to all, members pay $20 for a lifetime membership in the co-op and receive an annual dividend on company profits. REI will close both its physical and online stores for Black Friday for the fifth consecutive year, encouraging its employees, 18 million co-op members and the general public to spend time in the outdoors.
