PORT ANGELES, Wash. â The Peninsula Daily News reports that the Port Angeles Planning Commission voted down a proposal that would permit people to live in RVs on private property. The plan was intended to address a critical housing shortage in the community, and would have provided temporary three-year permits for people to dwell in certified RVs and campers on private lots. Applicants would be required to provide electricity, water and side sewer connections.
Commissioners cited a lack of code enforcement and the need for a housing needs assessment in rejecting the proposal. Citizens who spoke against the ordinance cited concerns ranging from diminished property values to increased crime.
Port Angeles is the largest town on the Olympic Peninsula and was named one of the Top 10 Best Small Towns In America by Livability.com in 2015 and one of the Best Small Towns Next To A National Park by sonian Magazine in 2016. The community is the gateway to Olympic National Park, which received 3.4 million visitors last year.
