LAFAYETTE, La. - KATC.com, the local ABC affiliate, reports that voters in the parish have approved a tax rededication that will provide $500,000 a year to fund the CREATE initiative, aimed at improving local parks. Parks and Rec Director Gerald Boudreaux told KATC that Acadiana Park’s campground will be getting major capital improvements to make its campsites more attractive to tourists, as well as additional advertising dollars, under the new program.
The city-owned Acadiana Park is located on 110 acres on Lafayette’s northeastern edge. The park currently has 70, mostly shady, water and electric sites with 30 and 50 amp service, and a dump station. Other facilities include the 3-story Nature Station, offering exhibits, nature talks and guided nighttime hikes by flashlight plus more than 3 miles of trails; a 36-hole disc golf course; and a kayak/canoe launch accessing the 9.5-mile Bayou Vermilion Paddle Trail, leading to the classic Acadian town of Vermilion. Activity options include lighted tennis courts, basketball courts, a covered picnic area with grills, children’s playground, and trails for jogging and biking.
