LONDON - The the Caravan and Motorhome Club of Great Britain announced that the Volvo XC60 D5 PowerPulse AWD R-Design won the club’s Tow Car of the Year 2019 competition receiving the overall trophy as well as winning in the Best Family Tow Car category and Caravan Weight 1500-1700 kg class. Now in its 36th year, the Caravan and Motorhome Club Tow Car of the Year competition instituted changes in its format for 2019, putting vehicles into caravan weight categories – rather than listing them by price – to make it easier for buyers to tell which cars could tow their caravans.
Extensive testing at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire featured 35 entries matched to ten Bailey of Bristol Pursuit, Pegasus and Unicorn caravans appropriate for their towing weight. Each car underwent comprehensive tests which included an Alpine route, with gradients culminating in a 17% hill start and a 26% downhill brake test; the ability to join fast traffic from a standstill; reversing; visibility; driver and passenger comfort; and capabilities at speeds in excess of UK legal limits conducted in the high-speed bowl. Judges also tested whether a car’s boot could hold the bulky accessories needed on a caravan trip and measured the towball height, both solo and hitched up.
Winners in other categories included the Peugeot 3008 Allure, Volkswagen Polo, Volvo XC40, Volkswagen Touareg, Volkswagen Amarok and Å KODA Kodiaq. A complete listing of the winners can be found on the Caravan and Motorhome Club website.
