Uncertified Trailers Shipped By Erwin Hymer Before Bankruptcy

CAMBRIDGE, Ontario â The Hamilton Spectator reports that Erwin Hymer NA receiver Alvarez and Marsal has filed documents in court stating that the running gear on Erwin Hymer’s new line of towables had not been certified by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), as required by Canadian law. The axle, brakes, hitch and breakaway device that activates the trailer's brakes on the new line of Touring trailers had not been approved by the CSA before being shipped to dealers in the US and Canada. The United States Department of Transportation does not require trailers to meet the CSA standard, but the RV Industry Association does require compliance in order to bear the RVIA certification mark.
According to the receiver, 125 Touring trailers are still on Erwin Hymer lots, with another 20 on dealer lots in Canada, and 40 more at dealers in the U.S. It’s not clear how many Hymer Tourings have been sold to retail consumers, or if the units sent to dealers were intended to be sold or were only demonstration units. Some dealers who received the trailers say they have received recalls for the units. Erwin Hymer NA introduced the Touring trailer line in 2016 and began selling them in August 2018, according to court documents.
