The 2018 Main Street Now Conference, held last week in Kansas City, MO, announced this year’s winners of the Great American Main Street Award. Each year, the National Main Street Center, an independent subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, selects three communities that epitomize the American entrepreneurial spirit. This year’s winners are Oregon City, OR, Rock Springs, WY, and Howell, MI. Oregon City, the first incorporated city in the American West and the official end of the Oregon Trail, has been transformed with nearly $42 million invested in the downtown district’ and over two-dozen new businesses. Rock Springs, a former Wyoming coal mining town, has developed a vibrant local economy and cultural scene with the Freight Station, abandoned for more than 30 years, now serving as a community center. In the small, rural community of Howell, Michigan, new enterprises such as Aberrant Ales, a local brewery, the Frontal Lobe co-working space, the Howell Opera House and Howell Movie Theatre, make downtown once again a destination.
“This year’s winners are a testament to the power of Main Street revitalization,” said Patrice Frey, president and CEO of the National Main Street Center. “Thanks to dedicated leadership, broad community support, and commitment to a comprehensive and incremental approach, these three Main Street programs have brought renewed vibrancy to their downtowns.”
