News Blip: "Positive Thinking & Boots Saved My Life"
CBS News Reports On The Tale Of Fisherman John Aldridge Finding Himself Overboard In The Black Of Night Forty Miles Offshore And Grasping For A Way To Survive
Commercial fishermen risk their lives every time they venture out into the deep sea. Even the CDC says this profession is particularly dangerous. 155 commercial fisherman have lost their lives during a 17 year period beginning 1992. The story covered here is of John Aldridge, who accidentally set his vessel into auto pilot while he fell to the back of the boat with his partner Anthony Sosinski sleeping in his bunk. He eventually fell overboard and was stranded without help.
CBS News writer Jim Axelrod interviews survivor John Aldrideg and reports on his tale: "I realized that my boots were very buoyant," just like a life preserver. "When I feel in the water, I was on my back, trying to stay afloat, and my legs came up to the surface." To make matters worse John witnessed a shark fins swimming in the distance. Luckily, the sharks did not bother him. Anthony Sosinski awoke and realized his friend was missing and radioed the Coast Guard. John was in disbelief when he finally sees his rescuer.
