AAA reports that gas in almost every state is now cheaper than a week ago, a month ago and a year ago. Gas prices across the country have fallen to a national average of $2.74, down seven cents from last week, 3 cents less than a month ago and 18 cents cheaper than a year ago, and AAA expects that trend to continue. States in the Great Lakes and Central regions saw the biggest drops with Ohio down 21 cents this week, while motorists in the Rockies saw the smallest weekly change. Gas is least expensive across the Southern states with Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and South Carolina all reporting prices under $2.40 per gallon, while West Coast states have the most expensive gas, with California prices averaging $3.88. Florida was the only state in the region and country to see an increase on the week, with prices at the pump up 2 cents.
“Refinery utilization in the United States is at its highest level since early January, resulting in overall gasoline stocks at healthy levels to meet robust summer demand. Prices are dropping due to cheaper crude oil and at the same time U.S. supply is keeping pace with demand,” Jeanette Casselano, AAA spokesperson, said in a press release. “The national average is poised to fall to at least $2.70 this week – an indication that pump prices may be even cheaper this summer.”
