News Blip: Strengthening Outdoor Skills
KARE11 Reports On Minnesota DNR's I Can! Program Offering Beginners Who Venture Outdoors Guidance And Equipment To Have Fun
In efforts to get more people outdoors and enjoy what Minnesota has to offer, the DNR is offering help with basic outdoor skills and survival tips. Beginners can join the I Can! program and affordably learn an array of outdoor activities that will help them enjoy the outdoors to the fullest. For example, the program provides step-by-step instruction for camping, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, fishing, and more.
KARE11 journalist Heidi Wigdahl reports in her story: "As we soar into the summer, the DNR wants as many Minnesotans as possible enjoying the outdoors." The I Can! camping program teaches how to build a campfire. And no, this does not mean how to light a match and throw it on some lighter fluid. The idea here is to make a fire from scratch. This skill is useful beyond camping and could save one's life in certain situations. More than 12,00 people have signed up for I Can! since 2012.
