National Geographic Reports On The National Park Service's Efforts In Growing Diversity In The Outdoors
For many years, the outdoors has been subject to a lack of diversity. The National Park Service [NPS] turned 100 last year, and still, only 7% of park visitors tend to be from African American descent; the other ethnicity's and races are even rarer. However, the NPS along with other organizations and leaders are pushing to bring a change to its outdoors.
As National Geographic writer Tik Root relates in his article: “Right now, people of color don't get out,” says hike-leader Teresa Baker, who is an affordable housing project manager by day and spends the rest of her time advocating for greater outdoor diversity. “We need to be out and walking about and enjoying these spaces like anyone else,” she says.
