News Blip: Bill Set In Motion To Allow RV Sites On Zoned Land
Willamette Week Reports On Controversial Bill Circulating That Could Allow The Siting of ADUs & RVs On Land Zoned For Agricultural Or Rural
The House Committee on Human Services and Housing has been considering passing a bill that would authorize Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and Recreational Vehicles (RVs) to be sited on rural residential and agricultural land in Oregon. This is a controversial issue as both parties make pleading cases. To new residents of Oregon, or to city-dwellers aware of government efforts to promote the development of ADUs and other construction that promotes density, the bills could seem sound logical for fixing the state's housing shortage.
Willamette Week writer Nigel Jaquiss relates in his article: "There have been few more contentious issues in Oregon politics in this century than the property rights ballot measures in the previous decade." Public opinion on why the bill should and should not be passed also surfaced. For example, farmers oppose the bills due to land being taken over from their crops, while some people dealing with the shortage of affordable housing, including a county commissioner each from Lane and Marion counties testified in favor of the bills.
