Alpena, which is located in Michigan, has brought in many tourists, researchers and divers over the years thanks to its unique and beautiful outdoor locations and natural history. Mary Beth Stutzman, president and CEO of the Alpena Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, says that "What really has had an impact is people who come for a multitude of reasons. They stay longer."
Some of their activities include stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, hiking, biking as well as hunting for 300-million-year-old fossils. Moreover, just the museum (Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center) alone draws in an average of 90,000 individuals a year. As a result, this brought great improvements to their outdoor industry.
