Dornwood Park Installs Technology To Prevent Theft

TOPEKA, Kan. - New technology is thwarting thieves from stealing copper at a local park in Kansas. WIBW News reports that technicians installed a new Light Guard Pulse monitoring system at Dornwood Park recently to detect interruptions in the power supply to the parks lights and send immediate alerts to the system operators, who can quickly send police officers to the park.
This comes as a result of thieves stealing copper wiring from lights and scoreboards earlier this year. "This place is no longer gonna be a viable place for easy copper theft," said Scott Wilkinson, a product specialist for Elecsys Corporation, who makes the technology. "It's gonna be monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so the chances of them being able to get it successfully is going way down." The system was approved by Shawnee County Commissioners in the summer. The seven mile Dornwood Park Trail is located in southeast Topeka and is accessible from a trailhead on SE 25th Street, east of California Avenue. Shawnee County Parks & Recreation partners with the Kansas Trails Council to build and maintain many of the park's nature trails.
