New Atlas reports that, shortly after Elon Musk’s introduction of the futuristic Cybertruck, an electrified pickup apparently inspired by a James Bond movie, Musk confirmed that a camper is in the planning stages as well. The Cybertruck, which is still years from commercial availability, although pre-orders are being accepted now, is more than fit for camping and off-roading. The truck will reputedly handle a payload of 3,500 lbs and tow 14,000 lbs, while accelerating from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds, and cover a quarter mile in 10.8 seconds. An adaptive ride height air suspension system allows it to self-balance loads, and it can lower itself for highway travel and raise itself to 16 inches of clearance for off-roading. The Tesla battery pack will deliver up to 500 miles on a charge, and have a 250-plus kilowatt charging capability for fast top-ups.
The Tesla cybercamper concept features a tent-camper pop-up, housing a raised sleeping platform for two, atop a slide-out kitchen with a dual-hob induction cooktop. The big Tesla battery provides plenty of camp power for running cooktops, fridge/freezers, stereos, blenders, heat, air conditioning, WiFi, etc. Musk confirmed in a Tweet that he plans a solar charging option that adds 15 miles to the vehicles’ range, as well as possible fold-out solar wings that would generate 30 to 40 miles per day and provide plenty of power for extended off-grid camping.
