Since 2014, OutdoorFest has brought the experience of camping inside New York City, offering an adult overnight camp as well as a variety of outdoor adventures in an urban environment. This year’s overnight camp takes place June 1-2 at the Henry Kaufman Campground on Staten Island where a 75-acre green space will transform into NYC’s largest campground. Activities planned for the 24-hour adult summer camp include guided hikes, forest bathing, yoga, survival skills demonstrations, photography walks, backpacking workshops, a scavenger hunt, plus classes in backcountry cooking and fly fishing, all conducted by local community experts and outdoor adventure companies.
The Green Mountain Energy Chill Zone will offer a place to hang out, with hammocks, slacklining and games. The evening concludes with live music at Stage in the Woods, s’mores, beer from Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, the annual 5K Headlamp Trail Run, and late night stargazing. The next morning campers enjoy a breakfast of granola, Breakfast Grains and coffee supplied by fest sponsors.
The overnight camp kicks off a full week of classes and outdoor experiences, many of them free. These include hikes at nearby beaches and mountains, kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddleboarding, surfing, the popular Mappy Hour and a presentation on living the vanlife in NYC.
