News Blip: Everyone Benefits From Outdoor Recreation
Public News Service Reports On The Impact Of People Getting Outside And Having Fun In West Virginia When It Relates To The Economy
West Virginia is seeing a large pay off of wages and tax dollars in the state due to the outdoor recreation business. According to The Outdoor Industry Association, recreation pays $2.4 billion in wages and more than $650 million in state and local taxes for WV, even before that money moves out through the local economy. Furthermore, the industry is growing and the future looks bright.
Public News Service writer Dan Heyman relays in his article: "Observers sometimes downplay the outdoor industry's impact, arguing it creates many part-time, low-pay jobs. But Kenny Parker, co-owner of Water Stone Outdoors in Fayetteville, says when the number is 90,000 jobs, there's going to be room at the top. Plus, he says the money that comes in with tourists rolls over into other, unrelated businesses." Parker believes people will surely benefit from the outdoor industry as it steadily brings dollars to the economy.
