Fishing tournaments have come a long way since its start in the early 1960s. Back then, they were just small contests. However, today it has turned into a booming and popular business. Even participation from high schools and colleges have become evident with scholarships and recruitment of young anglers taking place.
As News-Leader writer Ken White relates in his article: Today, tournament fishing is big business; even high schools and colleges field teams of anglers. There are many high school bass teams throughout Missouri, a lot of them located close to big impoundments where good bass fishing tournaments take place. Weigh-ins at tournaments draw big crowds of parents, relatives, friends and interested onlookers.
