BERLIN, Maryland - Campsites at he popular Oceanside Campground at Assateague Island National Seashore have been repeatedly damaged by coastal storms in recent years, as well as suffering from sand deposition and encroachment from the adjacent dune system. To maintain the campsites in a sustainable manner, the National Park Service (NPS), according to a press release, is suggesting a new flexible design strategy for relocating campsites at risk.
The environmental assessment prepared by the NPS addresses potential impacts to natural, cultural and recreational resources that may result from the proposed project, which is now available for public review and comment. Written suggestions and comments can be submitted online to the NPS Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) website before August 6, 2018. The NPS will also host a public open house at the Environmental Education Center (7206 National Seashore Lane, Berlin, MD 21811) from 4 to 7 p.m. on July 23 to answer questions. The full text of the proposal can be seen here describing the Oceanside Campground relocation.
