News Blip: Will We Preserve Washington’s Olympic Peninsula?
Daily Yonder Reports On Wild Olympics Campaign And Its Efforts To Protect Land And Support Job Creation On Northern Coast Of Washington
Washington’s Olympic Peninsula is an area used widely for outdoor recreation. To preserve these lands and waterways, U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer and Senator Patty Murray have begun a campaign dubbed the 'Wild Olympics' proposal. In essence, this is a bill with the goal to protect natural land and create more jobs for the district's economy. Despite the fact that some citizens on the Peninsula oppose the bill, Kilmer believes the act will not negatively affect road ways or timber jobs currently in place.
Daily Yonder writer Bryce Oates relates in his article: "Roy Nott, an Aberdeen resident and timber businessperson, believes that strengthening public lands protection is a key to attracting talent and long-term employees." The fate of the Wild Olympics campaign has yet to be decided. Senator Murray and Representative Kilmer both acknowledge that their proposal might not make it through Congress this year. But they think it represents the future of Northwest Washington.
