AccuWeather Reports On The Importance Of Lightning Safety, Being Aware And Taking Action Early During Thunderstorms This Summer
We all love mother nature and what she offers. But just as there are benefits, there are drawbacks. Enjoy the outdoors by all means, however be cautious of the increase in thunderstorms this summer while trekking outside. During the warmest months of the year, an increase in thunderstorms combined with people wanting to engage in their favorite activities leads to deadly lightning strikes every year.
AccuWeather writer Michael Kuhne relays in this article: "While the odds of getting struck by a fiery bolt from the sky in any given year is approximately one in 1.1 million, the odds of getting hit in a lifetime is around one in 13,500, according to NOAA Lightning Safety Specialist John Jensenius." As a note, males constitute almost 80% of all fatalities from lightning strikes. According to NOAA Lightning Safety Specialist John Jensenius, lightning deaths on a year-to-year average have significantly declined as more people become aware of the dangers.
