GLEN ARBOR, Mich. - MLive reports that a National Park Service plan to convert campgrounds in the popular Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore to a reservation system has been delayed by the contractor working on the project with Recreation.gov. Plans to convert 100 percent of the campsites at the popular D. H. Day Campground were announced a year ago by Park Superintendent Scott Tucker and were to have been completed by November of this year. The new system is designed to eliminate the overnight lines of cars with people sleeping in them that crowd the campground entrances each night in the summer. The contractor expects to complete the work by early 2019.
The D. H. Day Campground is open from the first Friday in April through the last Sunday in November each year, and starting in 2019, sites will be available by reservation during the busy season from May 1 through October 15 up to six months in advance. The changes will also affect the Platte River Campground where all the campsites will now be available for reservation through Recreation.gov. Previously only two-thirds had been reservable with the remainder first come-first served.
