The Franklin News-Post reports that the Board of Supervisors for Franklin County, Virginia, has approved a special-use permit for a proposed campground and RV park at Magnum Point Marina on Mountain Lake. Camp Reel Simple will have 14 cabins and 28 RV sites. According to its Facebook page, the marina already offers covered boat slips, boat, jet ski and inflatable rentals, a full service restaurant with on the water delivery, beer and wine, a bait shop selling live bait and fishing supplies, and a maritime service center with trained mechanics.
Camp Reel Simple is expected to bring needed jobs and revenue to the area, host special events, and provide more lodging for Mountain Lake tourists. However, opposition from local residents caused the board members to impose several conditions on the construction, including a split-rail fence with mesh wire separating the campground from residential property, a buffer of Green Giant Arborvitae trees along the campground perimeter, a full-time campground manager on site, and signage warning campers not to venture off the property or to turn vehicles around in the residential neighborhood.
