Alabama’s Sipsey River Recreation Area Opens For Public Access

The State Lands Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) announced four Open Woods Weeks at the Forever Wild Sipsey River Complex. The first Open Woods Week is scheduled for June 15-24, with additional weeks July 13-22, August 10-19, and September 7-16. The Sipsey River Complex, located in Tuscaloosa County near Buhl, AL, features 7,155 acres of hardwood forest and swamp lands along the Sipsey River in the central part of the state, administered by Alabama’s Forever Wild Land Trust. The purpose of the Open Woods Weeks is to increase public access to the preserve.
During Open Woods Weeks, the public can drive into the complex along the main gravel road leading from the Jack's Drive parking area to the south gate. The main gate will be open from 4 p.m. on Friday through Sunday at 4 p.m. the following week. Hiking, biking, kayaking and horseback riding are popular activities in the tract administered by Alabama’s Forever Wild Land Trust as well as camping, picnicking, fishing, hunting, canoeing, birding and wildlife photography.
