People can now buy a permit to cut his/her own Christmas tree down in Montana for the tradition. An extremely popular program, Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest began selling permits in mid-November. Due to the high demand of permits, the woods will likely be a crowded place until December 24th.Andrew Curtis, of KXLF News, relays in his article: "Once you have your permit, the National Forest Service is asking you to please make sure you are on either National Forest land or BLM land. Also, when you find that perfect Christmas tree, try and cut one from an over-crowded stand of trees in a meadow. And make sure you're not in a timber sale area or campground." It's important to make sure the tree that is going to be cut, is less than 12 feet. Also when cutting a tree, make sure you are at least 100-feet away from main roads, streams or recreation areas.
