EPHRATA, Pa. -- The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania last week awarded a grant and tax-credit package worth $678,000 to Spartan Motors for the expansion of its Epharata, PA plant, expected to create up to 200 new jobs, Trailer Body Builders reports. The award the follows a $214 million United States Postal Service (USPS) contract to Spartan to build more than 2,000 cargo-body vehicles for parcel delivery, the largest revenue contract in Spartan company history.
“On the heels of our USPS truck-body win, we needed to make a determination on where to manufacture those vehicles,” Daryl Adams, president and CEO of Spartan Motors, said in a company press release. “Rather than build or buy a new facility elsewhere, we made the decision to re-invest in and revitalize our Ephrata location, placing the Utilimaster truck-body plant here. We're committed to this location, our workforce, and to better serving our customers by having a larger presence on the Eastern seaboard.”
Based on the significant economic impact of the Ephrata facility reinvestment, Pennsylvania, through its Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), awarded the Pennsylvania First Program grant, adding Job Creation Tax Credits and Manufacturing Tax Credits. Spartan Motors, a leading designer and manufacturer of specialty chassis and vehicle bodies, expects build and deliver the initial order of 2,000 truck bodies over the span of two years, beginning in May, with an option for additional quantities to be delivered over a third contract year.
