The National Park Service (NPS) announced that the popular Oregon Inlet Campground on Hatteras Island at Cape Hatteras National Seashore will stay open all winter this year as the park service evaluates new camping opportunities for the seashore. All 120 sites, including 47 with water and electric, will be open as well as one restroom facility. "We plan to try this for a season and consider it again during future years if the campground is used," Park Superintendent David Hallac said in a press release.
Farther south in the national seashore, the Hyde County Commissioners have voted to lift the ban on visitors to Ocracoke on Dec. 2, 2019. The ban has been in place since Hurricane Dorian hit in September causing devastating flooding and whole-scale destruction of NC 12. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore visitor center and restrooms in Ocracoke Village remain closed until further notice and the campground won’t reopen until spring. However, the Seashore boat ramp area and all ocean and soundside beaches are open, except the Ocracoke Beach Access and boardwalk, although repairs continue on NC 12.
