ATLANTA, Ga. - A highlight of the 2019 North American Commercial Vehicle Show (NACV), which concluded Oct. 31 in Atlanta, was the debut of the latest innovation from Cummins: a demonstration heavy-duty truck with fuel cell and battery electric power. The zero-emissions truck was designed without collaboration from any of the company’s original equipment manufacturing (OEM) partners, to allow all potential customers and end users to envision how Cummins’ fuel cell power technology can fit into their own future plans. The demo truck features a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell from Hydrogenics, a recent Cummins acquisition, as well as other components developed by Cummins, including a system controller, powertrain controls, wire harnesses and junction boxes, among others.
“Developing this cutting-edge hydrogen fuel cell truck as a technology demonstrator is an important step in gaining valuable insights that are critical to continue developing the right solutions for the market and preparing for the next 100 years,” Thad Ewald, VP of Corporate Strategy at Cummins and leader of the company’s Electrified Power segment, said in a press release. “Some companies make headlines talking about the future, but we’re busy building for the future.”
