News Blip: Women Demanding Better Hunting Gear
Portland Press Herald Reports On The Hunting Apparel Market Lacking Proper Gear For Women Who Demand More Options
In an industry traditionally targeted to men, hunting and outdoor apparel does not provide proper gear for women devoted to the sport. They do not want to look pretty while out in the wild; they need the same protection and camouflage as men. Pink colored camo and tightly clothing may be desirable for some women; however for someone like Georgette Kanach of Gray, Maine, this is unacceptable.
Portland Press Herald writer Deirdre Fleming speaks with Georgette for her article and reports: "I wear 90 percent men’s clothing, as I do not do pink on my hunting clothes,” said Kanach, 63. “Pink has no place in camouflage. And men’s clothes are tougher and more durable. I do wish there was more women-specific gear.” As a result of the demand, retail stores catering to hunting apparel are beginning to add more options for women. At Kittery Trading Post, an outdoor outfitter in Maine, "pink" has started to diminish in women’s hunting clothing in recent years. While the accent color is still on the women’s clothing, it’s more subtle now.
