German automaker Volkswagen (VW) moved to plug a gap in its U.S. offerings with a new pickup design introduced March 28 at New York’s International Auto Show. Named the Atlas Tanoak, after a tree native to the U.S. Pacific Coast, the dual-cab, short-bed truck utilizes Volkswagen’s flexible MQB modular transverse matrix, also used in the Atlas midsize SUV. The five-seat pickup is built on an extended wheelbase with nearly 10 inches of ground clearance and is 214.1 inches long, 15.8 inches longer than the Atlas, making it a large midsize pickup by U.S. standards.
The Atlas Tanoak, VW pickup truck, has a 276-horsepower V6 engine with eight-speed automatic transmission and new 4MOTION® all-wheel-drive system, controlled with a center console-mounted shifter designed for use while wearing work gloves. The cargo bed is 64.1 inches long, 57.1 wide, and fitted with an innovative movable cargo rail for easy transport of cargo such as bikes or surfboards. Volkswagen America intends to produce the Tanoak at its state -of-the- art manufacturing facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where the Atlas SUV and Passat car are already under production. The Tennessee plant will also produce the new Atlas Cross Sport, a five-seat version of the 7-seat midsize SUV that VW started selling in 2017. The Cross Sport concept also debuted at the New York Auto Show.
