OAKLAND, Mich. - The Oakland County Board of Commissioners has given the go-ahead for the development of an off-road vehicle (ORV) park that has been on the drawing board for years. Located in Groveland and Holly townships in Michigan, the 235-acre park sits on state-owned land consisting of sand and gravel mines, but will be operated by the county under a 20-year agreement with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The as-yet-unnamed ORV park sits across Dixie Highway from Groveland Oaks County Park and Campground with easy access off I-75. Oakland County, located just northwest of Detroit, offers numerous recreational opportunities, including 12 lakes, golf and disc golf courses, zip lines, water parks and bicycle motocross courses, but this will be its first ORV facility.
More than 400 vehicles participated in a test event, the Dixie Gully Run, hosted by the county near the current site in 2014. “We wanted to test the market, as well as test the noise, dust, and general operation of an ORV park,” Dan Stencil, executive officer of the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission (OCPRC), said in a press release. “The ORV community loved it.” The park will be open to all types of ORVs, including full-size vehicles, side-by-sides, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), and motorcycles. The first 113-acre phase is expected to open in 2020.
