Immediately following the Midterm elections, government relations committee of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR), joined by representatives of the RV Industry Association, arrived in Washington to advocate for passage of a public lands and waterways recreation package during the lame duck session of Congress. The proposed legislation combines a number of existing bills supported by the RV industry into a single comprehensive package that addresses critical infrastructure and maintenance needs on federal lands and in national parks, including modernizing and expanding RV campgrounds and repairing roads, bridges and facilities. Other sections of the package would reduce red tape around land management projects, modernize fisheries management, expand access to America’s public lands and waterways, establish a 21st century Conservation Service Corps, and give all fourth-graders passes for free access to public lands and waters, among other provisions.
ORR’s government affairs team is also advocating for full funding for the Outdoor Recreation Satellite Account which measures the effect of outdoor activities on the U.S. economy, as well as reauthorization of the Farm Bill with provisions providing investment in outdoor recreation in rural America. ORR reps in Washington report that their meetings were generally positive and believe a deal could be reached in the coming months.
