Editor's Note: This news item was retrieved through NPS's website.
National parks all over the country will celebrate Memorial Day with a wide variety of events and activities. Two standouts include Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado and the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site and Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, NY. Patriotic music, WWII USO shows, graveside ceremonies, and special remembrances of veterans, first responders and other heroes fill the weekend.
At the Rocky Mountain National Park two special Memorial Day Weekend evening programs will be offered at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center. On Saturday, May 26, at 7 p.m. park ranger Steven Lambert will present “Rocky Rocks,” the story of the foundation that underlies the mountains. On Sunday, May 27, at 7 p.m., the Navy Band Northwest Brass Quintet will honor veterans with a concert of patriotic brass chamber music. These programs are free and open to the public, but space is limited. For more information about Rocky Mountain National Park, go to www.nps.gov/romo or call the park’s Information Office at (970) 586-1206.
Hyde Park, the home of FDR National Historic Site and the FDR Presidential Library and Museum, will host a series of public events over Memorial Day Weekend. On Friday, May 25, at 7 p.m. the FDR Presidential Library presents its 15th annual USO Show, patterned on the WWII-era shows put on to entertain American troops serving around the globe with live Big Band music from the 1930s and '40s, comedy and juggling, historic newsreels, and much more. Pre-registration is required for this event as seating is limited. Visit www.fdrlibrary.org to register, and for additional information. Other activities include a World War II encampment and military displays on the Library's front lawn on Saturday and Sunday; a Field of Honor flag display; and a graveside memorial service on Monday, May 28 at 1:30 p.m. in the Rose Garden. All activities are free with regular park admission.
