News Blip: Students Participate In Outdoor Science Program
Duke Research Blog Reports On GALS Program Held By Duke University In Overnight Hike To Study Ecology And Earth Sciences In Pisgah National Forest
Eight high school girls from across North Carolina and four Duke Ph.D. students travel to Pisgah National Forest and take a two week backpacking hike to give insight on ecology, earth science and chemistry. Duke scientists hosts the students in the program called Girls On Outdoor Adventure For Leadership and Science. For the students, this was a new experience that would have challenged them psychically and mentally.
Duke research blogger Robin relates in her article: Duke ecology Ph.D. student Jacquline Gerson came up with the idea for the program. “Backpacking is a great way to get people out of their comfort zones, and work on leadership development and teambuilding,” said Gerson, who also teamed up with co-instructors Emily Ury, Alice Carter and Emily Levy." The summer program gave these lucky eight participants a free trip, provided camping gear, and a chance to present their findings on Duke's West campus.
