News Blip: Jack Calvin Novel Brought Back To Life
SFGate Reports On "Square-Rigged" Being Republished By Writer Carolyn Servid To Emphasize The Origins Of Marine Ecology To Today's Society
Even the best of novels can sometimes get lost in time and never reach those actually interfered in the subject. Writer and book designer Carolyn Servid and Sitka Sound Science Center Director Lisa Busch embarked on a project to republish 1929 Jack Calvin novel "Square-Rigged" so that people today may read and learn about what scientific ideas of marine ecology were introduced at that time. The novel was set in Alaska and focused on a young adventurer on the high seas.
SFGate spoke with Carolyn Servid and reports on what she had to say: "What made this book special in terms of marine science is that when they catalogued critters of the intertidal, they didn't just list everything they saw taxonomically." Calvin drew from his own experience in the 1920s traveling to Alaska from San Francisco aboard the square-rigged Star of Zealand. This is the type of book that should not go untold; therefore, Servid agrees that it was a privilege to work on bringing the book back.
