Many retirees are becoming work campers, who live their life driving to different locations to find seasonal jobs. One work camper, 60 year old Bill McClain, is currently working a sugar beet harvest for American Crystal Sugar. He and his wife have been part of the work camping community for 16 years now.
As The NY Times writer Christopher Farrell relates in his article: “I like the lifestyle 90 percent of the time,” McClain said. “When I hate the job, I just do it. But we don’t go back.” When the sugar beet harvest is done, they plan to hit the road and spend time with family. After that, seasonal jobs in Arizona and California beckon. “There is work all over the country,” Mr. McClain said. “We’re ‘cruising the 70s.’ You try and stay at 70 degrees as much as possible.”
