News Blip: Overcoming Fears In The Outdoors
San Francisco Chronicle Reports On Radio Show Host Zip Lining Near Klamath Lake And Realizing The Trade Off Needed To Maximize Excitement
Bob Simms, known widely in the Northern California area as an outdoorsmen, and also radio show host on KFBK, travel a lot and when he found himself in Oregon near the Klamath Lake area he couldn't resist but stopping at Crater Lake Zipline. This is a zip line available for public use with a tree canopy tour in a national forest. Riders have to at least be 10 years of age and weight between 70 to 250 lbs. Not to mention, the participants must sign a waiver stating they are in good health.
Tom Stienstra, writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, relates in his article: "Zipliners quickly learn about aerodynamics. That is, how you position yourself on a run affects your speed. To go fast, hold your legs out in front, or more horizontally. To slow down, let your legs hang down, or more vertically. If you allow your legs to sway out to the side, you will swing out; not a good idea." Simms was most cautious, yet pleased, with the final "step-off", in which one leaps off the platform with harness attached to get back to the ground.
