The Seattle Medium's Lornet Turnbull Reports On Organizations Focused On Bringing Diversity To The Outdoors
More than a decade ago, Jourdan Keith founded the Urban Wilderness Project which focuses on exposing young people to the great outdoors. Their next trip will include hiking, building a bridge, repairing trails, and backpacking deep into the woods while being exposed to all the wonders that nature has to offer. “For me, it’s beyond the act of taking young people out into the wilderness; it’s engaging them in culture through stories about the land,” Keith said.
Other similar organizations include Outdoor Afro, Washington Trail Association, and Black People Hike. Many of these organizations have members that are young professionals who are looking to socialize and network with others in their community. ‘’For us, it’s three things: seeing the beauty around us, becoming physically active and appreciating each other and culture through casual conversation,” says Dorian Waller, one of the members of Black People Hike.
