Somerset county recently began construction on a new hiking and biking trail that will extend between Crisfield and Westover when finished. Due to a combined $5 million in grants from both the federal government and the state of Maryland, the trail will be built on unused railbed that will be turned into a ten foot long bicycle and pedestrian trail with benches along the span and parking at both ends.
According to the Delmarva Now article, "This trail is a conversion of the former railway that lined Route 413. The first phase is anticipated to be completed by summer 2020." Part of the popular Somerset Trail Mix, the Route 413 rail-to-trail has been home to various railroads, but due to bankruptcies the railway has been abandoned since 1976. Notably the new Somerset Hiking Trail will use zero tax payer dollars according to the director of the Department of Recreation and Parks Clint Sterling.
