The RV Industry Association (RVIA) reports that President Trump has signed the Reviving America’s Scenic Byways Act of 2019 into law. The Scenic Byways program was stopped by Congress in 2012, but thanks to public pressure, including by those who used RVAct to contact members of Congress to support reinstating the program, the new bill passed the Senate unanimously and the House by a 404-19 margin this year. According to the bill, the Secretary of Transportation must start the application process for new byways within 90 days and designate a round of new National Scenic Byways within one year. Scenic America, a non-profit advocacy group, and RVIA teamed to support the legislation, citing studies that found that Scenic Byways both protect America’s scenic and historic places and contribute to strong local economies. “RVers regularly drive down National Scenic Byways, like Historic Route 66, Skyline Drive, or the Blue Ridge Parkway,” RVIA VP of Government Affairs Jay Landers said in a news release. “We applaud Congress and the President for reopening the National Scenic Byways Program and ensuring that millions of Americans will continue to be able to experience the magic of the open road."
