ASHCROFT, B.C. - The Ashcroft-Cache Creek Journal reports that the Ashcroft Indian Band has been awarded a nearly half-million dollar grant to provide upgraded services for tourists exploring British Columbia. The tribe will use the funds to construct a campground, update existing washroom and shower facilities to make them more accessible, and renovate a building as a concession stand near two new softball fields. Other attractions include a walking trail and the restored historic church of St. John at the Latin Gate.
“The special circumstances provision of the Rural Dividend [Fund] was specifically designed to assist communities undergoing economic hardship, such as those impacted by wildfire,” Doug Donaldson, minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, told the local paper. “This project will provide jobs and attract tourism dollars to support communities and families in the region.”
