WXPR, a public radio station in Rhinelander, Wisc., reports that the Vilas County Zoning Committee voted unanimously to approve a conditional use permit for a 200-site campground and zipline in the town of Lincoln. The development will occupy 32 acres on Highway 17 just south of Highway 70, with frontage on Mud Creek. The developers, Jason and Nicole Bach, told the committee that the development would take place in three phases with phase one including some sites as well as septic, well, and a shower and laundry building, followed by more sites in phase two. The zipline/aerial track system would be built in the final phase. Some 45 persons attended the open hearing with one in favor and 11 opposed to the development. Those in opposition cited concerns about noise, road impacts, trespassing, lowered property values, blastomycosis, and impacts on the natural wild rice beds of Mud Creek. In approving the development, the committee set four conditions: both exit and entrance must be on Skinner Road, egress onto Highway 17 will require DOT approval, all lighting must face downward, and signs to be put in place to direct traffic, as well as compliance with all state and federal regulations.
