MOUNT DESERT, Maine â The Mount Desert Islander reports that the Mount Desert Campground, located close to Acadia National Park in Maine, is celebrating 60 years of welcoming campers this summer. It was originally established by Arnold Allen, who bought the property on the Somes Harbor waterfront intending to harvest the trees, but decided instead that the site deserved to be shared as a campground. Opening day was July 3, 1958.
Now operated by the Craighead family, Mount Desert Campground offers many sites with views of the water, including a few suitable for vans or small trailers, with water and electric. Many campers return every year, including Steve Cushing, who came that first summer and has returned regularly for the past 60 years. The campground’s docks, where campers can access Somes Sound aboard kayaks, canoes, and other boats, have been named for Cushing as part of the 60th anniversary celebration.
