Free Keeping Georgia Wild Festival Takes Place May 18

MANSFIELD, Ga. - The Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division will host a free festival at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center near Mansfield, Georgia, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sat., May 18, 2019. The festival will include activities that focus on Georgia wildlife, conservation, and outdoor recreational opportunities, many aimed at kids who can experience archery, fishing, shooting, and mini-boat rides led by Georgia conservation rangers. Other planned activities include live animal presentations, face painting, solar viewing with the Charlie Elliott Astronomy club, wildlife-themed booths and a gun safety event at the shooting range. Free admission includes a complimentary hot dog lunch.
The Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center includes 6,400 acres of forests, lakes, and fields conveniently located off I-20 near Mansfield. Activities at the center include hunting, fishing, picnicking, as well as trails for biking, hiking and horseback riding, an archery range, a shooting range, a boat ramp, ADA accessible fishing piers and a primitive campground. The park is named for the late nature writer and Covington, GA native Charles Elliott who served as the first Director of Georgia State Parks, the first Director of Georgia’s Game and Fish Commission, and for 50 years was the Southeastern Field Editor for Outdoor Life magazine.
