BABBITT, Minn. – Hometown Focus, a news outlet in Virginia, MN, reports that a new 22-acre campground is in the works for the city-owned Birch Lake Recreation Area in Babbitt, with construction to be completed by 2021. The campground will have 49 new sites for RVs and tents, and will be connected to the new Prospector Loop ATV trail system. The city of Babbitt recently reconstructed the park’s public boat landing, adding a new parking area with handicapped parking, two new docks, a concrete boat landing ramp, boat cleaning area and rain garden. Funding for the project came in part from taxes paid by the mining industry via the Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation program.
Babbitt’s Birch Lake Recreation Area, about 2.5 miles east of town, currently is the location of a popular developed swimming beach with a picnic area, concession stand and beach house, as well as an accessible fishing pier. A paved path leads to the town center and the new paved Mesabi Bike Trail, eventually to stretch some 155 miles, will run nearby. The 21-mile long Birch Lake is located in the Superior National Forest in northeastern Minnesota, and is one of the most popular fishing destinations in the region for walleye, bass, panfish, and northerns. The area is a popular one for canoeing, having the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness located just two portages away.
