ORLANDO, Fla. - Analysis by AAA indicates that nearly 47 million Americans will be traveling over the July 4th holidays, defined as Tuesday, July 3 to Sunday, July 8, the highest number since AAA started tracking 18 years ago. Some 40 million of those will be traveling on U.S. highways. INRIX, a global transportation analytics company, warns that travel through the country’s most congested cities could take twice as long as the normal trip. Predictions indicate that late afternoon on Tuesday, when travelers join regular commuters, will see the most congestion, with drivers in Los Angeles, New York and Washington D.C. experiencing the most significant delays.
On the plus side, AAA reports that gas prices have been declining since Memorial Day, meaning less expense for those holiday roadtrips. The national gas price average at $2.85 is five cents cheaper than a week ago, 12-cents less than a month ago, although up 58-cents from this time last year.
